Chief John Okorie has warmly congratulated Professor Ayodeji Olawunmi Badejo on her assumption of office as the new Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU), describing the leadership transition as a significant and historic moment for the institution.
The congratulatory message follows the formal Handing-Over Ceremony held on Friday, 18th September 2026, at the Senate Chamber of Lagos State University, where the outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Distinguished Professor Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM, formally handed over the affairs of the University to Professor Badejo.
The ceremony brought together members of the University Management, Senate, principal officers, Deans, Directors and other members of staff, providing an important platform for the peaceful transfer of institutional leadership.
Chief John Okorie commended Professor Olatunji-Bello for her service, dedication and contributions during her five-year tenure, while also acknowledging the peaceful and orderly manner in which she handed over the leadership of the University.
He noted that the transition carries special historical significance, as it represents the first time in LASU’s 43-year history that a female Vice-Chancellor is handing over to another female Vice-Chancellor.
Chief Okorie also congratulated Professor Badejo on becoming the University’s 10th Substantive Vice-Chancellor. He expressed confidence that her experience, knowledge and leadership vision will contribute to the continued advancement of LASU in the areas of education, research, innovation, staff development, student welfare and institutional growth.
Speaking during the ceremony, the outgoing Vice-Chancellor expressed appreciation to the University community for the support and cooperation she received throughout her tenure. She attributed the achievements of her administration to the collective efforts of Management, staff, students, alumni, government and other stakeholders.
She also emphasised the importance of continuity, institutional stability and collective responsibility in sustaining the progress of the University.
In her acceptance remarks, Professor Badejo expressed appreciation for the confidence placed in her and acknowledged the foundation established by the outgoing administration. She pledged to build upon existing achievements while pursuing initiatives aimed at strengthening teaching, research, innovation, staff development, student experience and stakeholder engagement.
Chief John Okorie described the peaceful transition as an encouraging demonstration of institutional continuity and responsible leadership. He urged the entire LASU community to give the new Vice-Chancellor the necessary support and cooperation required to advance the University’s vision and mandate.
According to him, leadership transition should not be viewed simply as a change of personalities, but as an opportunity to consolidate achievements, introduce fresh ideas and strengthen institutions for future generations.
He therefore wished Professor Ayodeji Olawunmi Badejo a successful tenure and encouraged her to remain committed to academic excellence, innovation, integrity, inclusiveness and sustainable development.
The historic handover at LASU stands as a reminder of the importance of continuity, peaceful succession and collective commitment to the growth of higher education.
