WHEN EXCELLENCE IS IGNORED, HISTORY STILL TAKES NOTE

Nigeria lives in a painful contradiction. We often celebrate criminality over character, mediocrity over merit, and those who have cornered public funds over those who have laboured honestly for excellence. While fraudsters are elevated and ex-convicts applauded, achievers are quietly sidelined.

But history has a way of correcting society’s misplaced priorities.

Today, it is only right to recognise and celebrate Dr. Oladipupo Wilson Diriwari, a Nigeria/UK–trained legal luminary whose journey is anchored in discipline, intellect, and global relevance. In an era where noise often replaces knowledge, Dr. Diriwari stands out as a voice of substance—shaped by law, driven by justice, and refined by international exposure.

At the 80th Anniversary of the United Nations General Assembly, held in Westminster on 17th January 2026, a forum defined by intellect and global responsibility, Dr. Diriwari’s presence affirmed Nigeria’s capacity to contribute meaningfully to international discourse. The gathering featured influential voices including UN Secretary-General António Guterres; Richard Hermer, Attorney General for England and Wales and Advocate General for Northern Ireland, representing UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer; former President of the UN General Assembly and Executive Director of GWL María Fernanda Espinosa; Annalena Baerbock, President of the 80th Session of the UN General Assembly; and Ishaan Shah, Lead for Intergovernmental Support and Pact for the Future Implementation at the Coalition for the UN We Need (C4UN).

In such a space, relevance is earned not assumed.

Beyond global recognition, Dr. Diriwari’s work speaks directly to our local reality. He has consistently represented and defended vulnerable children, stood firmly for the protection of women’s rights, and championed the need for deliberate investment in youth participation in governance.

His advocacy reflects a deep understanding that a society cannot progress while its most vulnerable are unprotected, nor can democracy thrive when its youth are excluded from decision-making.

This is what true representation looks like: not empty slogans, but earned presence; not borrowed relevance, but tested competence.

Dr. Oladipupo Wilson Diriwari embodies the Nigeria that works hard, thinks deeply, and earns respect beyond our borders. At a time when the nation desperately needs integrity, clarity, and vision, his rise reminds us that excellence still matters even when ignored at home.

Let us learn to honour substance over spectacle, and capacity over convenience.
