Man of Multiple Competencies: Malik Ikpokpo Bags Sportville Sport Personality of the Year Award
As Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Delta State Chapter, Hon. Sir Itiako Malik Ikpokpo, KSM, initiated the Local Government Games, an impactful platform designed to nurture young talents, promote grassroots sports development, and foster unity across Delta State.
Driven by a broader vision for the Niger Delta region to diversify beyond crude oil and harness its vast human and cultural resources, he conceptualized the Niger Delta Games. This groundbreaking initiative is focused on discovering young sporting talents, promoting cultural integration, and strengthening regional unity.
In partnership with the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), the lead sponsor, the maiden edition of the Niger Delta Games was successfully hosted in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, where over 600 young talents were discovered. The second edition, held in Benin City, Edo State earlier this year, has further elevated the profile of the competition, earning both national and international acclaim, including recognition by the International Athletics Federation.
Today, the Niger Delta Games stands as a benchmark for talent discovery and sports development, and has firmly established itself as a major event on Nigeria’s sporting calendar.
In recognition of his exceptional ingenuity in sports administration, organization, and management, Hon. Sir Itiako Malik Ikpokpo has received numerous honours and accolades. The latest of these is the prestigious Sportville Sport Personality of the Year Award, 2025, a most deserving recognition of a man of excellence.
Heartiest congratulations Boss.
