The Presiding Bishop of Bible Life Church Cathedral (BLCC), Bishop Umunna, has expressed concern over the increasing hardship in Nigeria, calling for passionate, people-oriented leadership, constitutional reform and renewed efforts to address the country’s deepening social and economic challenges.

Bishop Umunna made this known during his annual press conference held at the headquarters of Bible Life Church Cathedral, Fasasi Street, Olodi-Apapa, Lagos, where he addressed issues bordering on national development, ethnic divisions, poverty, unemployment and the impact of the prevailing leadership system on Nigerians, including the Christian community.

According to the cleric, the hardship confronting citizens requires urgent attention from leaders who genuinely understand the suffering of ordinary Nigerians and are committed to improving their living conditions.

He stressed that leadership should go beyond occupying political offices, insisting that those entrusted with public responsibilities must demonstrate compassion, accountability and a sincere commitment to the welfare of the people.

CALLS FOR CONSTITUTIONAL REFORM AND NATIONAL REDEFINITION

Bishop Umunna also called for a national conversation on Nigeria’s identity and constitutional framework, arguing that the country needs to redefine its direction to achieve meaningful unity and sustainable development.

He questioned whether the existing national structure adequately reflects the aspirations of Nigerians, suggesting that a review of the 1999 Constitution should be considered as part of broader efforts to address the country’s challenges.

The bishop’s position highlights the need for constructive dialogue among political leaders, traditional institutions, religious organisations, civil society groups and citizens on the future of Nigeria’s governance structure.

He emphasised that national development requires a system that promotes fairness, justice, inclusion and equal opportunities, irrespective of ethnic background, religion or social status.

ETHNIC DIVISION REMAINS A MAJOR CONCERN

Speaking on national unity, Bishop Umunna expressed concern that ethnic considerations continue to influence relationships among Nigerians, contributing to divisions that undermine the country’s collective progress.

He suggested that the promotion of ethnic interests over shared national goals makes it more difficult for citizens to work together towards a common future.

According to him, Nigeria’s diversity should be a source of strength rather than a reason for division, discrimination or mistrust.

He called for a renewed commitment to national unity, mutual respect and inclusive leadership capable of bringing people from different backgrounds together.

The cleric’s concerns underscore the importance of building institutions and public policies that encourage equal treatment, strengthen national identity and ensure that every Nigerian feels a sense of belonging.

POVERTY AND UNEMPLOYMENT: A GROWING SOURCE OF WORRY

Bishop Umunna further drew attention to the high level of poverty and the economic difficulties confronting many Nigerian households.

He questioned the limited visibility of government employment opportunities in the lives of ordinary citizens, asking when Nigerians last heard widespread testimonies of people securing government jobs.

His remarks reflected concerns about unemployment, the rising cost of living and the difficulties many families face in meeting their basic needs.

For many households, the challenge extends beyond finding employment to securing jobs that provide sufficient income to cover food, housing, transportation, education and healthcare.

The bishop’s comments also raise broader questions about the need for policies that encourage job creation, support small businesses, strengthen local industries and expand economic opportunities for young people.

He called attention to the importance of leadership that places the welfare of citizens at the centre of national planning and decision-making.

HOW THE PRESENT LEADERSHIP SYSTEM AFFECTS THE CHURCH

The BLCC Presiding Bishop also expressed concern that the prevailing leadership and economic conditions have affected churches and their ability to respond to the needs of their members.

According to him, the challenges facing the country are not limited to the political and economic sectors; they also have consequences for religious institutions and the communities they serve.

As poverty increases and families struggle financially, many people may find it more difficult to meet their personal needs while continuing to support community activities and religious programmes.

Churches also face the challenge of providing spiritual guidance and practical assistance to members experiencing unemployment, hunger and other forms of hardship.

Bishop Umunna’s remarks therefore point to the relationship between national economic conditions and the ability of religious organisations to sustain their humanitarian and community-development responsibilities.

He suggested that improving the welfare of citizens would have wider benefits for families, communities and institutions across the country.

A CALL FOR LEADERSHIP WITH PASSION AND PURPOSE

At the heart of Bishop Umunna’s message was a call for leaders who possess genuine passion for service and understand the responsibilities that come with public office.

He maintained that Nigerians need leadership that prioritises human welfare, promotes national unity and creates an environment where citizens can pursue their aspirations without being overwhelmed by poverty and economic uncertainty.

Such leadership, he suggested, must be demonstrated through practical policies, responsible governance, employment opportunities and a willingness to listen to the concerns of the people.

His message also serves as a reminder that national progress requires more than political promises. It demands consistent efforts to strengthen institutions, improve public services and create opportunities that enable citizens to live with dignity.

As Nigeria continues to confront economic and social challenges, the bishop’s annual press conference provided an opportunity to draw attention to issues that remain important to the country’s future.

His call for passionate leadership, constitutional reconsideration and greater national unity reflects the need for sustained dialogue on how Nigeria can build a more inclusive and prosperous society.

Ultimately, the central message from Bishop Umunna is that leadership must be measured not merely by the positions people occupy, but by the positive difference their decisions make in the lives of ordinary citizens.
